As the "Arni Fridriksson" she was built for the Icelandic Government as a Fishery Research Vessel and launched on 1st of March 1967. The ship was built at Brooke Marine in Lowestoft (South) England. She originally measured: 449.0 GRT, 117.0 DWT. Loa: 41.40. m, Beam: 9.90. m. Hence the 'grandfather rule' can be applied subject to flag.
She was converted and rebuilt several times for various research and survey campaigns and was renamed MARS CHASER in 2001, finally the THOR CHASER in 2012. She was equipped as a standby, escort & guard vessel. In this role, (as MARS CHASER) she had a 5 year stint in the Mediterranean Sea before returning to colder climates to work in the North Sea offshore energy markets again.
She was used in this role as a ‘Chase Vessel’ for seismic survey campaigns and for guarding offshore wind farms under construction and finally in 2016 to guard a survey vessel in the Porcupine Basin to prevent the 3D seismic survey equipment to be damaged by fishing activity. With her versatile gear on board the vessel she could lift floating equipment and nets on board and return them to the sea when the campaign had passed. Her ample accommodation for up to 36 persons on board, together with her equipment and seakeeping comfort in the rough North Atlantic made her the best candidate for this type of campaign, even when more modern ships were available.
With the downturn of activities in the Oil & Gas industry she was laid-up and consequently sold to her new owner. He decided to offer her for resale due to a change in plans. She can now be acquired at a price of Euro 350,000 in full DNV class, located in Malta. A great candidate for an expeditionary yacht conversion!
